In 1962 the Dalesman magazine invited readers to write about their best ever meal in the Yorkshire region.  B.M. Robinson submitted a memory of a meal at a grandparent’s home:

‘The best meal I ever had in Yorkshire was at my Granny’s cottage at Catwick in the East Riding of Yorkshire. My Grandad had pulled fresh peas and dug up small new potatoes, while my Granny had a large piece of thick rib beef in the oven.’

‘I can still see, yes, indeed I can smell the aroma from two blue-and-white tureens piled high with lovely fresh vegetables, the blue-and-white Wedgewood meat dish bearing the succulent joint, and the matching gravy-boat full of rich brown gravy.’

‘Of course, there were crisp, golden Yorkshire puddings with gravy first, to be followed by the meat and vegetables. Lastly there was a deep gooseberry pie with a very short crust topped with real cream.’
